Why WordPress Needs a Better Crop Tool
WordPress includes a basic image editor in the media library, but it requires you to manually open each image, draw a crop, and save — one image at a time. There is no way to apply the same crop dimensions to multiple images at once, no focal point control, and no automatic cropping on upload.
Regenerating Thumbnails with Divi Image Compressor
Divi Image Compressor includes a Regenerate Thumbnails tool in the Bulk Compress tab. It re-generates all registered WordPress image sizes for every image in your media library, using your current quality setting. You do not need a separate plugin — the functionality is built in, and it respects your quality preferences.
Introducing Smart Crop & Compress
Divi Image Compressor includes Smart Crop & Compress. It works like CSS object-fit: cover — specify the exact output dimensions, and the plugin scales the image so it fills those dimensions, then trims the excess. No distortion, no letterboxing.
The drag-to-position focal point sets which part of the image is kept. A visual dot appears over a preview of your target aspect ratio. Drag it to the most important part — a face, a product, a logo — and the crop algorithm keeps that point centred.

Cropping New Uploads vs Existing Images
Uploading New Images
The Smart Crop & Compress tab includes a drag-and-drop upload zone. Drop multiple images at once — each is uploaded, cropped to your dimensions, and compressed in one step.
Cropping Existing Media Library Images
Below the upload zone is your existing media library. Search by filename, select images, and click "Edit Crop" to open a per-image modal. Position the overlay, click Apply, and the image on disk is replaced with the cropped version. WordPress automatically regenerates all thumbnail sizes from the new original.
Size Presets for Common Use Cases

- Instagram Square — 1080 × 1080 px
- Portrait — 800 × 1000 px
- Landscape — 1280 × 720 px
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the crop destructive — does it replace my original image?
Yes, by default. The cropped version replaces the original file on disk. If you want to keep the original, enable "Keep Original File" in Compression Settings before cropping. This saves the original as a separate media library item.
What is a focal point and why does it matter?
A focal point tells the plugin which part of the image to keep centred when it applies the crop. Without a focal point, a basic crop takes the exact centre of the image — which may cut out the subject. By dragging the focal point to your subject, you control exactly what stays in the frame.
Can I set different crop dimensions for different images in the same batch?
The output dimensions apply to the whole batch. However, you can adjust the focal point per image by clicking "Edit Crop" on any staged image. After the batch is processed, you can re-crop individual images by selecting them from the media library grid and applying a new crop.
Does the crop tool work on existing WooCommerce product images?
Yes. Any image in your WordPress media library can be cropped, regardless of whether it was uploaded via WooCommerce, the media library, or the Divi builder.
What image formats can I crop?
The crop tool accepts JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WebP images. AVIF images in the media library are listed but cannot be cropped (AVIF is a supported output format, not an input for the crop tool).
