Can I Crop Images Within WordPress?

WordPress Has a Basic Crop Tool — But It Has Limits

Yes, WordPress does include an image editor. Go to the Media Library, click on an image, and select "Edit Image". From there you can crop, rotate, flip, and scale — but only one image at a time, by drawing a freehand crop rectangle, with no way to specify exact pixel dimensions.

For most content sites this is too limited. You cannot apply the same dimensions to multiple images, enter exact pixel values, choose a focal point, auto-crop on upload, or combine cropping with compression.

How Divi Image Compressor Solves This

The Smart Crop & Compress tab provides a complete crop tool with none of those limitations:

  • Exact pixel dimensions — enter any width and height
  • Drag-to-position focal point — a blue dot lets you choose the crop anchor
  • Batch processing — apply the same dimensions to many images at once
  • New upload + crop in one step — drag files onto the page and they land already cropped
  • Per-image focal point — open a modal to adjust the crop on any individual image
  • Automatic compression — cropped images are compressed using your quality and format settings

Is the Crop Destructive?

Yes — by default, cropping replaces the original file on disk. Enable "Keep Original File" in Compression Settings to save the original alongside the cropped version as a separate media library item.

Cropping Existing Media Library Images

The Smart Crop & Compress tab shows your existing media library below the upload zone. Search by filename, select images, and crop them to your current output size. This is ideal for retrospectively standardising images — for example, bringing all WooCommerce product images to a consistent 800 × 800 px after uploading them over several months at different sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a better way to crop images in WordPress than the built-in editor?

Yes. Divi Image Compressor's Smart Crop & Compress tab provides exact pixel dimensions, focal point control, batch processing, and integrated compression — all from within your WordPress admin.

Can I crop to a non-square aspect ratio?

Yes. You can enter any width and height combination. The plugin will scale and trim the image to fill exactly those dimensions using the cover-crop algorithm.

What happens to existing posts and pages when I crop a media library image?

WordPress updates the attachment metadata so all pages and posts display the updated image. The URL changes only if the output format changes (e.g. JPEG to WebP). In that case, the plugin updates the attachment record so WordPress serves the correct file.

Can I preview the crop before applying it?

Yes. When you click "Edit Crop" on any image in the media grid, a modal opens showing the full photo with a drag-to-reposition crop overlay. You can position the crop precisely before clicking Apply.

Does the crop work on PNG images with transparency?

Yes. Transparency is preserved when cropping PNG images. If you are also converting to WebP or AVIF, transparency is also preserved in both formats.
